on Sabich, the Slow Movement, and TAE
Sabich is a Mediterranean street-food.
Words are actually a kind of body orgaמ – of the language kind
– – –
Listen to a story:
I stopped to get a Sabich. I was rushing.
I told the sweet guy behind the counter, “I called to try and order ahead, but no one answered.”
He laughed and said: “There’s a number. But no phone here.”
I said: “…Maybe that way people could order in advance, and the bags would just be ready, waiting…”
And he said:
“No. No!
Sabich must be eaten here!
Pizza—you can order that home for the evening.
Sabich must be eaten here.”
I looked into his eyes, and I got it.
The personal connection.
How much hummus–spicy–onion to put, and how.
The thing that miraculously forms when two people meet—especially when it comes to nourishment, to personal preferences, to attunement—
how intimate that is. How whole – When it’s like that.
And I said to him:
“There’s something called the Slow Movement. Have you heard of it?”
And he said no.
“It’s that whole thing of slowing down, of meeting…
not always being the most efficient, but rather – present. Attentive.”
And he said: “Yes. Exactly that.”
And that’s when I started thinking about the point of TAE.
Because he knew about it—
the slowness, the meeting, the rightness of pausing to eat—
surely more than I do.
I had the words for it in my head.
So really:
What do concepts give us?
(If the embodied knowing, the understanding, the wise practice is already there—already alive)
And I didn’t know.
So, I turned to the body.
And up came this image of words and concepts as long-branching limbs of a tree—
reaching outward, offering shade, bearing fruit.
And words are like our hands.
(I learned this long ago from Gendli –
words are, actually, a kind of organ, of the language kind.)
And with words, we can do, create, build—
Not just be. That matters too. That’s the foundation. The spring.
But also: reach.
And connect with other people.
This is exactly why the TAE seminar was created – To bring your unique knowing and expertise
(like how to prepare, serve, and eat Sabich!)
together with the vitality and wisdom of our hands—
our organs of speech and language.
You can take your unique inner knowledge one step further into the world –
to form new concepts, a ‘mini-theory’, and a capacity to act in the world.
Sabich:
tastes much better then it looks…..
